In September 2008, Grand Traverse County set precedence by becoming the first county in Michigan to offer web streaming solutions to citizens.
Web streaming is a digital version of audio and video that is sent (streamed) over the Internet for viewing on a personal computer connected to the Internet. A major benefit of streaming is that the contents are indexed, which allows the viewer to skip directly to a desired point in the video without having to fast forward or rewind. Within eight days of each meeting, a full agenda along with links to relevant issues will be available on-line. Another benefit is a keyword search capability that allows users to search all archived meetings up to one year on a keyword. Viewers may click on search results to be directed to the specific location of the agenda item within the video.
In order to view web video, viewers should have a broadband connection such as DSL, cable modem, or other high speed connection in conjunction with Windows Media Player
. 56K is required for video. Video and audio require 100kb. Dial-Up users may receive an audio-only stream.
