Homemaker Aide Program

The Commission on Aging can provide you with light house cleaning assistance.  The Homemaker Aide can do any of the following types of activities: dusting, vacuuming, washing dishes, making beds, washing floors, laundry, cleaning bathrooms, washing indoor windows.  A semi-annual assessment is conducted by the Assessment Specialist to monitor your needs.

 

Home Health Aide Program

The Commission on Aging can provide you with a Home Health Aide who can help you with the following: bathing, blood pressure checks, oral care, hair care, blood sugar checks, prescription review, and changing of non-sterile dressings.  A quarterly assessment is conducted by our Registered Nurse to monitor your care.

Respite Care 

 

Respite care CAN be provided once per `week, in 4 hour blocks, by a certified nurse aide (CNA).  The CNA will provide such services as bathing, oral care, skin care, hair care, meal preparation, light house cleaning, laundry, washing and changing bed linens, socialization, and assistance with mobility, toileting, eating, exercise regimens.

The GTCOA provides the following types of service: lawn maintenance including spring clean-up, mowing and fall leaf removal, changing of storm windows and screens, and snow removal.

A trained nurse performs foot care for area senior citizens. The services provided are: callous buffing, nail trimming, therapeutic massage, and an overall foot assessment.

Information on numerous services are available for senior citizens.  It is kept on file and available to the public.  Request for services are taken and referrals are made to other agencies when an individual's need does not fit within existing Commission on Aging programs.

 

 

BATA Bus Passes

 

Because of a VERY GENEROUS DONATION, the Commission on Aging  can provide limited BATA Bus Passes to our clients.  Clients are able to purchase 3 BATA passes per client, at a greatly reduced rate, while they are available.

Each BATA pass has 44 punches and are provided to clients based on our sliding fee scale.   To find out more about this program, please contact the office at (231) 922-4688.

Transportation Coupons

With thanks to a VERY GENEROUS DONOR, Transportation coupons are available to Commission on Aging clients.

 

Clients can purchase 8 coupons per request, up 4 times per year. The maximum number of coupons each client may receive is 32. Each coupon is worth $5 and the cost is dependent on client income.

 

Coupons are intended to help make the use of transportation vendors more affordable to our clients, however they may not completely cover the cost.

 

Coupons must be used only at Commission on Aging contracted vendors, per the attached list.

Intergenerational Card Program

Holiday Cards

 

Each year, local grade school students make holiday cards for senior citizens in the Grand Traverse County area.

 

 

 

Personal Emergency Response System (PERS)

 

A personal emergency response system is placed in the senior citizen's home and is activated in the event of an emergency situation.  Designed to provide a sense of security to those who have serious physical limitations or living alone.

 

Home heating Fund

Limited financial assistance is provided on a one-time basis, to senior citizens who are unable to pay a utility bill which will affect their home heating.  Funding for this program is limited, and submission of an application does not guarantee approval.

CRITERIA:
The individual must;
1.  Be a Grand  Traverse County resident.
2.  Sixty (60) years of age or older.
3.  Have income of 200% of poverty level or lower.
4.  A past due, shut off, or no fill notice must have been received.
5.  The individual must have no available assets.

A completed application (with supporting paperwork) and an appointment is required.

AARP Tax Assistance



and Safe Driving Programs

During the months of February, March and April - volunteers from AARP assist senior citizens in completing non-complex tax returns - at no charge.

From April to October, AARP volunteers conduct 8-hour Driver Safety Courses, which are specially designed for mature drivers.

AARP charges a fee for this program, please contact our office for more information.

These services are provided by AARP through the Commission on Aging.  Reservations are required, please contact the Commission on Aging office to schedule an appointment. 

Tax appointments will be taken after mid-January, and Driver Safety Course appointments will be taken starting in mid-March.

 

Loan Closet

 

Equipment, such as wheelchairs, walkers, commodes, and bath benches are loaned to senior citizens in Grand Traverse County.

Baskets of Bounty

 
 

Donated new items are packaged and delivered to senior citizens of Grand Traverse County in need during the holiday season .

NMC BBQ

Each year in May, we deliver NMC BBQ meals to homebound seniors.

In May of 2011, Commission on Aging volunteers packaged and delivered a record 491 meals to Grand Traverse County residents who were not able to attend the barbeque.
