County Clerk

Passport and CPL Photo Services now available, $10 per set.

The County Clerk is elected for a four-year term and is responsible for keeping records of births, deaths, assumed names, co-partnerships, military discharge papers, and issuing and filing marriage licenses.  In addition, the Clerk processes concealed pistol licenses, notary bonds, passport applications, and veteran's peddler permits.  The Clerk serves as Clerk of the County Board of Commissioners, Board of Canvassers, Jury Board, and Gun Board.  The Clerk is also a member of the County Election Commission and the Plat Board.

The County Clerk is the Clerk of the 13th Circuit Court and Family Court Records. The Circuit/Family Court Records office handles the filing of civil cases over $25,000.00, felony criminal, divorce, matters involving minor children (abuse & neglect matters, emancipation of minors, juvenile delinquency, paternity, child support and parental consent waiver), legal name changes, personal protection orders and passport applications.

The County Clerk administers all election functions required by law.  Part of those duties include the supervision of all national, state, and local elections and includes the training of all election workers in the County for those communities with a population of under 10,000.  The Clerk is also responsible for the administration of the Michigan Campaign Finance Reporting Act for those candidates that file for office at the local level.

The County Clerk's office consists of two office locations.  Information is below for each office.

Effective Wednesday, February 5, 2014, the County Clerk's Circuit Court & Family Court Records offices have combined into one office located on the 2nd Floor of the Hall of Justice.  Effective that date, all new cases or pleadings within an existing case of any type in 13th Circuit Court should be directed to Circuit & Family Court Records, 280 Washington Street, Suite 206, Traverse City, MI 49684

Older casefiles will continue to be stored in the Historical Courthouse at 328 Washington Street.  Availability of access to these files may be limited and we encourage you to call to inquire about access (231) 922-4710 or (231) 922-4679.  Many files are imaged or on microfilm and can be accessed from the public terminals in our Circuit/Family Court office in the Hall of Justice.
