Concealed Pistol License
Application for a Concealed PISTOL License (CPL)
Pursuant to MCL 28.425a, the Concealed Weapons Licensing Board includes three members. The County Clerk is the clerk of the licensing board.
New Applicants
Application may be obtained in person from your local police, sheriff’s department, County Clerk or on the Michigan State Police website.
Training must be completed before applying, and the certificate of completion shall contain the statement, “This course complies with section 5j of 1927 PA 372.”
Application Fee: $105.00. Fee may be paid by cash, check, money order, or credit/debit card (see link on the left of the page for credit card payments).
Completed application with attachments (passport photo and a copy of the safety training certificate) is filed with the County Clerk.
All applicants must be fingerprinted after application is submitted.
Fingerprint clearance and sheriff verifications may take several months.
After verifications, applications are submitted to Gun Board for approval.
You will be required to appear before the Gun Board. The Gun Board meets the third Thursday of every month.
Renewals
Application may be obtained in person from your local police, sheriff’s department, County Clerk or on the Michigan State Police website.
Start the process at least 2 months before the expiration of your current license.Application Fee: $105.00. Fee may be paid by cash, check, money order, or credit/debit card (see link on the left of the page for credit card payments).
Completed application with a new passport photo and current CCW license required when applying.
If your current CPL was issued after January 1, 2006, you should not have to be fingerprinted for your renewal. If it was issued prior to that date, you must be fingerprinted again.
Renewal applicants may be required to appear before the Gun Board.

License
A license issued on/after July 1, 2006, is valid until applicant’s birth date “that falls not less than 4 years or more than 5 years after the license is issued” by the Gun Board.
After Board approval, the Clerk’s office issues the CCW license. Licenses are available the Tuesday following Gun Board approval.
