Drain Commissioners are responsible for many aspects of surface water management. The Drain Commissioner develops design standards for storm water runoff management in new developments, and is involved in agricultural, commercial, and residential drainage; storm water management; lake levels; water supplies and sewer systems.

Mission Statement
Dedicated to provide for the health, safety, and welfare of Grand Traverse County citizens and the protection of surface water and the environment by providing storm water management, flood control, development review and water quality programs.
Vision Statement
The Office of the Drain Commissioner will be a recognized leader in public service by providing pro-active, environmentally sound, cost effective maintenance and services to improve efficiency and that consistently exceeds customer expectations, by utilizing environmentally sensitive approaches to storm water management, and creating an educated citizenry.
