FAQ's

The Grand Traverse County Health Department provides animal control services for all of Grand Traverse County.  The Animal Control division is an extension of the Communicable Disease Program for the control of rabies and other zoonotic diseases.  We have two certified animal control officers and a shelter capable of housing up to twenty animals.

Our animal control officers are authorized to investigate possible animal related law violations and take appropriate enforcement action.  Each year we conduct numerous investigations, ranging from relatively minor code violations to felony animal cruelty.

In some cases, our officers may promote voluntary compliance by educating owners about their animal care responsibilities; other situations may warrant administrative action and/or an arrest and criminal prosecution.  Additionally, our officers rescue animals that are stray, sick or injured, or endangered by floods, wildland fires, or other situations.

If you know of a situation where you believe an animal's welfare may be in jeopardy (such as animal abuse, neglect, injury, or endangerment) or where public health or safety may be impacted (such as a bite, attack, or harassment of a person by an animal), or that may otherwise be in violation of an animal related law, we urge you to contact our office and report what you have seen or heard.  A dispatcher will notify an animal control officer who will then investigate the situation.

Please call 231-922-2910.  Routine matters may be reported during regular department hours from 8:30am to 4:30pm. Please call for an appointment.

FOR ANY LIFE THREATENING SITUATION, PLEASE CALL 9-1-1.
