Maternal and Infant Health ProgramsMaternal and Infant Health Services are offered to improve the health outcomes of pregnant woman and infants. Women and their families are supported during pregnancy and through the baby's first year of life with health education, counseling, nutrition education, and help with transportation. These services are provided for Medicaid-eligible families. A team consisting of a Public Health Nurse, Social Worker, and Registered Dietician in the office and/or home setting provides services. Services include childbirth/parenting education, breast-feeding education, counseling in healthy behaviors and activities, coordination of care, smoking cessation, and community referrals for other needs. * For more information and to schedule appointments, call (231) 922-2730 | |
Newborn and Prenatal Assistance and Information
This is offered through the Healthy Futures program and is a free service for all pregnant women and children under the age of 5 years. A registered nurse will contact you during your pregnancy to answer questions you may have and help you connect to other resources of interest. The same nurse will also visit your family, after your baby arrives. WIC (Women, Infants, and Children)
WIC is a health and nutrition program that has demonstrated a positive effect on pregnancy outcomes, child growth and development.
Childhood Immunizations
Routine childhood immunizations are provided for anyone who is uninsured, underinsured, or have Medicaid and are under the age of 19 years old. Adult immunizations include Tetanus boosters, Measles- Mumps and Rubella, and Hepatitis. Flu and Pneumonia vaccines are given during special community clinics.

Dental Clinics North
The Traverse Area Dental Clinic provides routine dental procedures, dental cleaning, and prevention education for children and adults with Medicaid. The staff includes full-time dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants. Prevention is key to good dental health and should start in the home before the first visit to the dentist at age 3. Prevention education is integrated into all Health Department and Head Start programs.

Physicals for Children
Head Start Physicals
Physical exams include vision and hearing testing, lead testing, anemia testing, blood pressure and referrals for follow-up medical care. Contact Head Start for a referral.

Children with Special Health Care Needs
Children's Special Health Care ServicesCSHCS serves people under 21 years old in need of health care services for handicapping (or potentially handicapping) conditions. Clients with cystic fibrosis or hemophilia are eligible for indefinite coverage. CSHCS will cover costs related to specialized medical treatment, equipment, and supplies. Assistance is available to families that want help with obtaining services from other agencies, problem solving, or developing advocacy skills for maximum independence.
Families of all income levels are eligible to apply for CSHCS.

Free screenings are done through preschool programs and the local school districts. Hearing Screening is offered between 3 yrs and 5 yrs, Kindergarten, 2nd, and 4th grades. Vision Screening is offered to children between 3 yrs and 5 yrs, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th grades.Children that are unable to pass the screening are referred for follow-up care. Vision and hearing screening can also be done at the Health Department. Call to schedule an appointment.
