Grand Traverse County Comprehensive Plan

The Grand Traverse County Comprehensive Plan was adopted in December, 2002 as a comprehensive updated of the original county plan, Focus 2020, a County Master Plan. The Grand Traverse County Comprehensive Plan was developed by the Grand Traverse County Planning Commission with the support and input of County Residents and local units of government. Its primary purpose is to foster and understanding of the fundamental challenges of our future as a community and to outline approaches to address them. The plan recognizes that the County will continue to grow and, without thoughtful and creative guidance, that growth threatens the quality of life that is the hallmark of the community. The purpose of the Plan is to describe current conditions in the County and the implications apparent in current trends. It also sets forth and alternative path to growth management, including a series of actions strategies to begin the process.

The Planning Commission seeks the cooperation and support of the professional and citizen planners in each of the County's 16 local jurisdictions in the implementation of the Plan's recommendations. While the Plan provides overall guidance in managing the further growth and development of the County, responsibility for putting that guidance into practice must fall to the thirteen townships, two villages and the City of Traverse City.
