Brush Drop-off Site Opening
April 2, 2011 Opening the first Saturday of April for the season. This increasingly popular site is open on Tuesday from noon to 7 PM, Thursday and Saturday, 9-3 PM. Acceptable materials include: brush, branches, grass clippings,leaves-$5.00/cubic yard or $1.00/bag. Untreated construction wood-$8.00 cubic yard, Pallets-$1.00 each, stumps .50/inch up to 24" diameter.
Clean Out Your Files Week
April 24 - April 30, 2011 This is a no cost opportunity for businesses to dispose of unwanted paper material. Waste Management of Northern Michigan, Inc. will be providing a recycling container at the Sarah Hardy Farmers Market parking lot at the corner of Cass & Union Streets. Accepted material includes Newspapers, Magazines, Old Files, Office Paper, and Junk Mail.

Free Compost
April 30, 2011 (Saturday) 8:00 am to noon, (or until gone) Self serve, self haul compost is yours FREE at the Farmers Market parking lot (Union Street and Grandview Parkway), courtesy of the City of Traverse City & Grand Traverse County. Bring your own shovel and container and scoop the benefits of compost.
Please DO NOT remove any compost until 8:00 AM.

May 12, 2011 (Thursday) 1:00-6:45 PM There is NO CHARGE (up to 150 lbs.) to Grand Traverse County households and businesses for this service. Accepted material includes oil based paints, automobile fluids, cleaning products, pesticides, batteries, mercury, moth balls, pool chemicals and more...
An appointment is required and can be made starting April 12, 2011. It's easy to make an appointment. Visit www.RecycleSmart.info to create your appointment on-line or call the RecycleSmart Hotline at 941.5555.
Note: Latex paint is not accepted. Latex paints are not hazardous and can be dried out and disposed of in your regular trash. In order to accelerate the drying process, add an absorbent material such as cat litter, sawdust, sand, latex paint hardener available at many home improvement outlets, and allow to dry.
When paint is thoroughly dry, the remaining hardened material can be discarded in the regular trash. Please leave the lid off the can so your trash hauler can see the paint is hardened.

A highlight of Cherry Festival Week will be the 4th DTE Energy Green Day, being held on Friday, July 8th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Open Space.
Focusing on educational, interactive and participatory activities, we want visitors to learn about Renewable Energy products, Energy Efficiency & Sustainable Living Options, how to be better stewards of Northwest Michigan’s beautiful natural resources, and much more!

The Cherry Festival is currently seeking businesses and organizations interested in applying for participation in this event. The Cherry Festival will be offering both display booth space and family friendly, hands-on activities throughout the day. You can have just a display, just host an activity, or both. The Cherry Festival is especially interested in fun, interactive & educational displays and activities.

2011 RecycleSmart Kids Garage Sale & More!

The RecycleSmart Kids Garage Sale is a great opportunity to have your child become a savvy business person and at the same time learn how to reuse and recycle their old toys, games, books, movies, DVD’s etc. Only items pertaining to kids may be offered for sale. Please no furniture.
All participants’ sale items must be confined to the assigned 8 X 10’ covered floor space. Floor covering provided. No tables will be provided. Participants are responsible for setting up and cleaning up afterwards. Registration and payment must by received by August 12th, 2011. The first 50 RecycleSmart Kids to register for a booth will receive a free RecycleSmart wristband (glows in the dark).
Who: For ages 6-12 (with parent/guardian supervision)
Where: Grand Traverse County Civic Center – Howe Arena
Date/Time: Saturday August 20, 2011 9:00 a.m. to Noon
Cost: Participants - $5.00 for 8’ X 10’ “booth space”. FREE admission to buyers

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day
The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has scheduled another National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 29, 2011, from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. to provide a venue for persons who want to dispose of unwanted and unused prescription drugs.

America Recycles Day
America Recycles Day (ARD), November 15, is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and to buy recycled products.
The purpose of America Recycles Day is to continue to promote the social, environmental and economic benefits of recycling and encourage more people to join the movement toward creating a better natural environment.
Brush Drop-Off Site Closing
November 19, 2011 is the final day of the season for the Grand Traverse County Resource Recovery Brush Drop-Off site. Hours are Tuesday, noon -7:00 pm, Thursday and Saturday, 9:00 - 3:00 pm.
