"Take It Back" Business of The Year Award

Grand Traverse County Resource Recovery announced the recipient of the 2011 “Take It Back” Recycling Program “Business of the Year” Award. During the Resource Recovery Council meeting held on January 5, 2012, the Michigan Green Consortium (MGC) was named as the recipient. Accepting the award on behalf of the MGC was Ella Cooper-Froehlich, Mike Hasman, and Stephen Adcock.

 

The Michigan Green Consortium (MGC) is a trade association that works to promote the success of environmentally responsible businesses. Currently 60 local businesses are registered members including Grand Traverse County Resource Recovery (RecycleSmart). The Michigan Green Consortium (MGC) organizes and conducts the Clean Up and Green Up recycling events that are held during the Daylight Savings Time spring and fall time change weekends. These recycling events have drawn thousands of participants and have collected material for recycling, reuse, and repurpose. The next Clean Up and Green Up event will be held on Sunday, March 11, 2012 from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm at the American Waste Recycling Facility 280 Hughes Drive, Traverse City, Michigan. Brush Drop-off Site Open

Tuesday from noon to 7 PM, Thursday and Saturday, 9-3 PM. Acceptable materials include: brush, branches, grass clippings,leaves-$5.00/cubic yard or $1.00/bag. Untreated construction wood-$8.00 cubic yard, Pallets-$1.00 each, stumps .50/inch up to 18" diameter.

 

Clean Out Your Files Week

April 16 - April 22, 2012 This is a no cost opportunity for businesses to dispose of unwanted paper material. American Waste will be providing a recycling container at the Sarah Hardy Farmers Market parking lot at the corner of Cass & Union Streets. Accepted material includes Newspapers, Magazines, Old Files, Office Paper, and Unwanted Mail.

Free Compost

April 21, 2012 (Saturday) 8:00 am to noon, (or until gone) Self serve, self haul compost is yours FREE at the Farmers Market parking lot (Union Street and Grandview Parkway), courtesy of the City of Traverse City & Grand Traverse County. Bring your own shovel and container and scoop the benefits of compost.
Please DO NOT remove any compost until 8:00 AM.

Household Hazardous Waste & Pesticide Collection

May 10, 2012 (Thursday) 1:00-6:45 PM There is NO CHARGE (up to 150 lbs.) to Grand Traverse County households and businesses for this service. Accepted material includes oil based paints, automobile fluids, cleaning products, pesticides, batteries, mercury, moth balls, pool chemicals and more... 

An appointment is required.

It's easy to make an appointment. Visit www.RecycleSmart.info to create your appointment on-line or call the RecycleSmart Hotline at 941.5555. Note: Latex paint is not accepted. Latex paints are not hazardous and can be dried out and disposed of in your regular trash. In order to accelerate the drying process, add an absorbent material such as cat litter, sawdust, sand, latex paint hardener available at many home improvement outlets, and allow to dry. When paint is thoroughly dry, the remaining hardened material can be discarded in the regular trash. Please leave the lid off the can so your trash hauler can see the paint is hardened.
